Problem Description:
Import (IMP) fails with IMP-00010 not a valid export file header failed verification
IMP-00000: Import terminated unsuccessfully
00010, 00000, "not a valid export file, header failed verification"
// *Action: If the file was indeed generated by Export, report this an
// Import bug and submit the export file to customer support.
Solution Description
This error is because the dump file header is not recognizing by the import utility (IMP) which you are trying now. There might be different reasons for the same.
- Check any kind of manipulation happen to the export dump file.
- Make sure your file transfer is done through FTP binary mode.
- Make sure you have properly finished compress/uncompress activities of dump file.
- A legacy export (exp) dump file cannot be imported through Datapump utility (expdp) and vice versa. Make sure you are doing with proper import utility.
- When you try to perform the import with different version of import utility. E.g. Source database version is higher than the target database. Exp and imp tools are not forward compatible. An export dump taken from 10g cannot be imported to 9i database whereas it can be imported to 10g, 11g.
Here is the compatibility chart.
Export ->Import to | Use Export Release | Use Import Release |
8.1.6 to 8.1.6 | 8.1.6 | 8.1.6 |
8.1.5 to 8.0.6 | 8.0.6 | 8.0.6 |
8.1.7 to 8.1.6 | 8.1.6 | 8.1.6 |
9.0.1 to 8.1.6 | 8.1.6 | 8.1.6 |
9.0.1 to 9.0.2 | 9.0.1 | 9.0.2 |
9.0.2 to 10.1.0 | 9.0.2 | 10.1.0 |
10.1.0 to 9.0.2 | 9.0.2 | 9.0.2 |
Still if you face the issues and you wanted to import the same dump to the target you can raise service request with Oracle using metalink and check whether they can recover the export dump file.
